Overview
ICIQ Severo Ochoa Predoctoral Fellowships for Researchers Training are aimed at exceptional graduate students from all over the world. They support enrolment in a training and research program leading to a PhD in Chemistry in partnership with Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV).
The PhD will be ascribed to the CEX project funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades / Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MICIU/AEI) under the Severo Ochoa call.
Training and Objectives
The training covers research aligned with ICIQ-Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan: Innovative Catalysis, Renewable Energy Vectors, and Molecular Medicine. Each thesis project is supervised by two ICIQ Group Leaders.
Complementary training programme in technical and soft skills
Scientific seminars, hands‑on training in instrumentation
IP management, entrepreneurship, research integrity, grant applications
Project management, communication skills and career development
Annual SHARP programme (Severo Ochoa PhD Training Programme) two weeks per PhD year
Eligibility Criteria
Master's or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy or related disciplines, completed by October 2025
Graduate students from any nationality
Individuals already holding a PhD or previous predoctoral fellowship under MICIU/AEI plans are not eligible
Excellent academic record, strong commitment to scientific research, solid working knowledge of English
Evidence of English proficiency (e.g., B2 certificate, Cambridge First Certificate, IELTS 6 or equivalent, desirable but not mandatory)
Applicants from Anglosphere exempt as native speakers

Personal statement (max 2 DIN A4 pages, PDF) describing academic background, research experience and career goals
Official transcripts of BSc and MSc studies in PDF format (certified translations required for non‑Catalan/Spanish/English transcripts)
Certified academic record granting access to the PhD programme (BSc and MSc)
Contact details for letters of recommendation for two university professors or industry researchers
Evidence of English proficiency (see above)
Application period opens 3 November 2025 and closes at midnight (Spain time) 11 January 2026.
Evaluation Criteria
Academic and/or scientific‑technical career path (up to 50 points)
Scientific‑technical contributions up to 45 points
Mobility and internationalisation up to 5 points
Suitability of the candidate for the proposed research activities (up to 50 points)
Selection Process
Evaluation conducted by the ICIQ Severo Ochoa Committee following DORA principles. Threshold of 65 points. Short‑listed candidates may be contacted for a personal interview. Final decision communicated early February 2026. Successful candidates have five business days to accept the offer.
Fellowship Conditions
Contracts renewed annually up to 4 years, contingent on satisfactory performance
Offers salary, PhD enrolment fees (up to 4 years) and funding for short stays abroad
Gross yearly salary: first year €xxxx; second‑fourth years €xxxx (exact amounts not specified)
Full social security coverage and access to public health, pension, unemployment benefits
Temporary interruption permitted for part‑time leave, maternity, paternity, family care
Full‑time work at ICIQ; no other fellowship with the same purpose or regular income
