It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries. We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured. We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences. If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team. Context And MissionThe Atmospheric Composition group from the Earth Science department at the BSC-CNS searches for a postdoctoral researcher responsible for the scientific developments of the in-house emission modeling tools and emission datasets of the department, including the High-Elective Resolution Modelling Emission System (HERMES) and Copernicus CAMS-related emission products. The position will oversee maintaining, reviewing and improving the databases and estimation methodologies implemented in HERMES, including the integration of non-inventoried sources such as traffic dust resuspension and commercial cooking activities. The postdoctoral researcher will also be responsible of performing direct and indirect validation works against independent bottom-up and top-down emission datasets and using our in-house atmospheric chemistry transport model (MONARCH) to constraint and improve our emission modelling approaches, as well as of providing support for the use and application of the emission tools in the context of other air quality modelling activities performed in the Department such as Copernicus CAMS or CALIOPE. The applicant will work closely with atmospheric scientists and computational engineers that will support the interpretation and analysis of the emission results obtained and the technical development of the tools. Key DutiesUpdate and development of the databases underlying the emission modelling tools Development of methodologies to update and improve emission estimates Provision of quality assessment, evaluation and services of the emission modelling tools Support the implementation and application of the emission modelling tools in the context of air quality modelling activities RequirementsEducationA Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering, physics, data science, remote sensing or similarEssential Knowledge and Professional ExperienceStrong experience in atmospheric emissions and characterization of emission sources Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications Experience in programming and code development (python, R) Proven ability to publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals Fluent English, both written and spoken At least 1 year experience in similar fieldsAdditional Knowledge and Professional ExperienceExperience with revision control systems (e.G., SVN or Git) Experience in numerical air quality modelling Experience with GIS data and tools.CompetencesVery good interpersonal skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines Ability to work both independently and within a team Originality and critical thinking in assessing the quality of data from different sources Ability to initiate and maintain extensive contacts within the scientific communityConditionsThe position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona Applications procedure and processAll applications must be submitted via the BSC website and contain: A cover/motivation letter with a statement of interest in English, clearly specifying for which specific area and topics the applicant wishes to be considered.
