Reference: 687_25_ES_EDD_RE2 Job Title: Research Engineer - Python Earth diagnostics developer (RE2) About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and hosts EuroHPC JU. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D in computer and computational science under one roof, with over ***** staff from 60 countries. Context and Mission Within the Earth Sciences Department, the Data and Diagnostics Team develops the ESMVal Tool – a community diagnostic and performance metrics tool for routine evaluation of Earth system models. The role involves implementing new diagnostics, optimizing existing tools, providing user support, and participating in networking activities for European and national research calls. Key Duties Contribute to the optimization and development of the ESMVal Python tool. Ensure internal user support for the tool. Participate in including BSC and ESMValTool in international proposals. Education Bachelor in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Physics or related discipline. Essential Knowledge And Professional Experience Excellent computing skills in Python and experience with UNIX/Linux environments and scripting (bash, etc.). Experience managing large datasets and Python parallelization. Knowledge of climate data formats (NetCDF, GRIB) and associated libraries (Xarray, Iris, CDO, NCO, etc.). Additional Knowledge And Professional Experience Good programming skills for large collaborative projects and experience with git and/or SVN. Competences Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both climate and computer scientists. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to take initiatives, prioritize tasks and work under deadlines. Ability to work independently and within a team. Ability to learn and adapt to multiple programming languages easily. Fluency in English, both speaking and writing. Conditions The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department. We offer a full‑time contract (37.5 h/week) with a good working environment, state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, flexible hours, extensive training, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support for relocation procedures. Duration: Open‑ended contract depending on project and budget. Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement. Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, adjusted to the cost of living in Barcelona. Starting date: as soon as possible. Recruitment Process The selection follows a competitive examination system. Curriculum analysis: evaluation of experience, education, and training (40 points). Interview phase: the highest-rated candidates are invited to technical and administrative interviews (60 points). Technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience are assessed. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 is required. Panel composition includes at least three members with 25% representation of women. Additional assessment may include a personality questionnaire and technical exercise. All interview participants receive feedback.
